Keller School Board - Place 4
I believe that public education is one of the most important responsibilities our town and state undertake for its citizens. Children are the key to the future—and the key to preparing children for the future is quality education.
I was born and raised in a small town in upstate New York. Both of my parents were teachers, and I grew up with a deep appreciation for education. I earned an M.A. in Higher Education/Student Personnel from the University of Arizona and a B.S. in Marketing from the State University of New York at Oswego. An educator myself, I am seeking a position on the Keller ISD Board of Education as a concerned citizen and a father of three who wants to ensure that all students benefit from the rewards of a rich learning environment. I believe I have the experience, education and motivation to be a valuable board member, and I am excited about the opportunity to serve my community.
My platform is focused on three primary ideas:
1. Our teachers and school administrators are the experts when it comes to education. As a board member, I will trust and support those who are leading our children in their pursuit of academic success. I will listen carefully to these educators and ask probing questions in order to help make decisions that further empower KISD teachers and administrators to fulfill the district’s mission.
2. Education is an important investment—for those who have children in the school system and for those who do not. As a board member, I will advocate for our community and our schools and watch carefully over the investment our community makes in education.
3. Community involvement will help our schools continue to be outstanding. As a board member, I will help inform community members about ways they can become connected to our schools. Whether volunteering at one of Keller’s many schools, serving on a PTA board, lobbying state or local officials, or attending a school event—all these things help build a strong school system. As a board member, I will help to engage community members in the life of our schools.
More about Craig ….
I am director of residential services at Texas Christian University, where I oversee a professional staff of 18 full-time administrators, 40-plus hourly staff and nearly 100 student employees. I am responsible for managing both the facilities and programs associated with student housing for more than 3,500 students. The student housing experience is an important part of the educational experience, and I see many parallels with my work and the call to serve on the Keller ISD Board of Education.
I enjoy the chance to give back to both my profession and local community. I was appointed to the Keller ISD Citizen’s Bond Oversight Committee in Fall 2007 and I am a member of the Bette Perot Elementary School Continuous Educational Improvement Committee. I served as an executive board member for the Mid-Atlantic Association of College and University Housing Officers (a nonprofit professional association) for five years, including a three-year presidential term, and I was a board member for the Westfield Day Care Center in Westfield, New Jersey, one of the oldest daycare centers in the state. I was also a Cub Scout den leader for the Boy Scouts of America and have been an assistant baseball coach for three years for Fossil Creek Little League.
I am married to Shannon Allen who is a freelance writer. My son, Connor, and daughter, Elaina, are students at Bette Perot Elementary School. My youngest son, Seth, is almost 2. In my spare time, I enjoy golf, travel and working around the house.
